Amy: The Girl From Ipanema

In two weeks, AJW fans will have a chance to declare the new “standard version” of a 50-year old classic, The Girl From Ipanema. The track appears as a cover on the December 5, 2011 UK-release of Amy’s third album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures.

Here is some very brief background detail, with performances by sundry great artists. I believe that I know which performances greatly influenced Amy, but I am willing to be surprised.

Written in 1962, by Antonio Carlos and Vinicius de Moraes, the song was awarded a Grammy as Record of the Year in 1965. Norman Gimbel wrote the English lyrics. Pery Ribeiro made the first commercial recording of the song in 1962. In 2004, the Library of Congress inducted the song into the National Recording Registry.
